AUSTIN (KXAN) — Authorities had to shut down roads, overpasses and flyovers due to the winter weather in Central Texas this week.
If you MUST drive: slow down, increase following distance, don’t slam on brakes, steer in the direction of the slide if one occurs, stay in your vehicle if you crash.

One of the biggest impacts that authorities responded to was a 10-vehicle crash in south Austin on Ben White Boulevard near the South 1st ramp and Congress Avenue on Tuesday.

Wednesday closures, road conditions
2:05 p.m.: All lanes of Interstate 35 are closed at Grand Avenue Parkway near Pflugerville due to downed power lines, the Texas Department of Transportation said on Twitter. Traffic is diverting onto Exit 247.
12:15 p.m.: The Austin Police Department said all lanes near the 1800 block of North Capital of Texas Highway were shut down due to downed power lines.
7:22 a.m.: Most roads are open, and not many wrecks are reported, but drivers are urged to use caution when traveling.
There will be icy spots on roads all around Austin, Central Texas, and the Hill Country.
If you have to leave your home, use surface streets, avoid over passes, elevated roadways, bridges, etc. Even if they’re open, it doesn’t mean there isn’t ice on them.
Lago Vista Police say the bridges on 1431 have ice on them.
Tuesday closures, road conditions
12:20 p.m. Round Rock police have identified other roads with icy, dangerous conditions.
- Kenney Fort Boulevard north of Forest Creek Drive
- FM 1431 west of Interstate 35
- AW Grimes Boulevard at Chandler Creek Boulevard
- Old Settlers Boulevard at Chisholm Trail Road
10:45 a.m. The Round Rock Police Department shared an update on roads closed in the city.
- All flyovers between Interstate 35 and State Highway 45
- SH-45 westbound exit for Greenlawn Boulevard
- SH-45 eastbound exit for La Frontera Boulevard
- Northbound I-35 exit for RM 620 is shut down
- Eastbound RM 620 at Chisholm Trail
10:37 a.m. Portions of the main lanes of MoPac near the Domain are closed. Southbound MoPac is also closed near Barton Creek Mall.
The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority is also reporting a crash on the U.S. 290 toll at Giles Lane that is blocking all lanes in both directions.
8:50 a.m.: Crash on Hwy 71 at FM 973 in the eastbound lanes of 71. Hwy 71 eastbound is closed.
8:43 a.m.: Crash on 183A Toll southbound before Park Street is blocking all lanes.
7:22 a.m.: Crash on Hwy 71 Toll eastbound at FM 973. All lanes are blocked and there’s ice on the roadways.
7:18 a.m.: An AFD truck was hit by another vehicle while responding to another collision in the 9200 block of East Hwy. 290. No injuries were reported.
6:17 a.m.: ATCEMS responds to multi-vehicle collision with pedestrian involvement in the 300 block of West Ben White Boulevard, near Congress Avenue. Multiple ambulances are on scene.
AFD said 10 vehicles were involved, and at least one person died on the scene.
6:12 a.m.: ATCEMS responds to multi-vehicle crash at SH 130 and Hog Eye Road. Medics transported two trauma alert patients to Dell Seton with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.
Another minor injury was reported but the person refused treatment on scene.
5:37 a.m.: Lago Vista Police are reporting that ALL bridges and elevated roadways are iced over. Stay off the roads unless it’s an emergency.
5:34 a.m.: Cedar Park Police: 183A Toll in Cedar Park closed due to ice.
4:46 a.m.: AFD: Current area with significant issue is I-35 and SH 45 flyover in south Austin. Multiple vehicles reported to be in collisions or stuck on the flyovers due to ice.
4:37 a.m.: Austin Fire Department said crews were on scene of six traffic accidents relating to icing on the roadways. There have been 19 traffic accident responses since midnight.
4:26 a.m.: Austin-Travis County EMS says that most elevated roadways are iced over.
3:09 a.m.: Travis County Sheriff’s Office closed SH 130 proper at Gattis School Road due to ice.
3:09 a.m.: Travis County Sheriff’s Office closed the Howard Lane bridge in the 5400 block due to ice.
