PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A climber who fell between 700 to 1,000 feet on Mount Hood and was airlifted to a hospital died while other climbers remain stranded in the treacherous conditions.
Emergency crews responded to separate incidents at the Hogsback area Tuesday to help 2 injured people, however, the male climber was pronounced dead once he arrived at the hospital, according to officials.
At least 7 other climbers are still stranded. But late Tuesday afternoon rescuers reached those climbers at the 10,500-foot elevation and began preparations to help them down the mountain.
The sheriff’s office said rescuers were assisting 4 climbers to safety. An additional 3 climbers were making their way down the mountain without assistance. Three climbers are expected to be off the mountain about 7 p.m.Visit KOIN.com for updates.
