Suspected DWI driver crashes into west Austin condo

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man who police said was driving under the influence is recovering in the hospital after driving his car into a west Austin condominium complex Sunday night.

Austin Fire Department says the crash happened at the Lakehouse Condos located at the intersection of Scenic Drive and Lake Austin Boulevard at 11:07 p.m. The department said the man, identified as 28-year-old Taylor Millsap, ran a stop sign, hit a vehicle and a parked car.

“The vehicle that was being driven, pushed a parked vehicle into the building and the original car ended up lodged between the building and a handicap ramp for an adjacent property,” said Division Chief Palmer Buck.

Austin-Travis County EMS said paramedics took the driver to University Medical Center Brackenridge Hospital with potentially serious injuries. No one else was hurt.

Austin police said the driver was taken into custody at 12:58 a.m. Monday and charged with a DWI. They have not released the driver’s identity.

Part of the complex was leaning over so crews stayed there overnight. The damaged area was used as a storage unit and nobody was inside.

AFD said around 8:20 a.m. that they are working to safely remove the damaged vehicles from under the building. One car was removed about 20 minutes later.

Crews avoided a full collapse of the building when the damaged portion was removed around 9 a.m.

“Right now, the immediate danger is taken care of, it’s still laying there and it will have to be demo’d and they will have to take away all the debris and things like that,” said Robert Moore with the Austin Code Department.

One neighbor came to check out the damage.

“I heard a boom and went back to sleep,” said Scott Samson who has lived in the neighborhood for about 30 years. “This is a speed issue here. I’ve actually talked to the police department about trying to get some speed bumps on this road or something.”
