Tips on Re-Purposing Vintage Chairs

Studio 512

Allison Crawford of Allison Crawford Design stopped by to take us through a chair transformation. You can find chairs online from Etsy to Craigslist. From family and friends to garage sales and even thrift stores. Allison turned two chairs from bargain to the best seats in the studio. The first chair she talked about was $40 off Craigslist. First, she spray painted the chair a matte black. Unscrewed the seat and stapled a bold black and white print on to it. Mixing and matching is one of Allison’s specialties. She integrated a pillow with a smaller print that gave off a more tribal flare. Mixing modern and tribal, a perfect accent chair for your guest room. The last chair we looked at was bought for $20.  The mid century modern chair is more of a neutral with a pop of color. Allison sprayed painted the chair blue. Added a smaller print with a base of off white and blue patterns. Adding a bolder print for the accent pillows staying in the same color family. Here are some rules of mixing prints and patterns like a pro:

  • Choose one print to dominate and one to accent.
  • Mix prints of different scales
  • Keep your fabrics in the same color family
  • Use the exact pattern in a larger or smaller scale
  • If using the same pattern, invert the colors
