AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Masters begins this week signaling the start of golf’s great major season. Augusta National always brings out the best in the sport, and this year it included women.
The Augusta National Women’s Amateur debuted, bringing 60 of the sport’s best amatuers together for the first women’s golf tournament at the private club.
Jennifer Kupcho from Wake Forest earned the inaugural title. This week, attention turns to the Masters field and who will be wearing the green jacket at the end of the week.
Patrick Reed’s run as the defending champion could come to an end, or he could be the first to repeat as Masters Champion since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002.
Woods is playing better golf than he has in several years, looking for his fifth Masters victory and 15th major.
Jordan Spieth will always be considered a favorite at Augusta National because he always finishes near the top 10. Spieth hasn’t played well lately. He hasn’t finished higher than 30th in any tournament in almost nine months.
Rory McIlroy could complete the career grand slam with a victory at the Masters, but more than likely a winner will come from some other spot in the field.
