AUSTIN (KXAN) — Big name after big name flirted around the top of the Open Championship leaderboard during Sunday’s final round and yet the golfer without name recognition earned the Claret Jug.
Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy nor Tiger Woods could beat Francesco Molinari.
Molinari has been the best golfer in the sport over the last month and continued his torrid streak by winning the Open Championship by two strokes (-8).
On an afternoon where almost every golfer kicked it around the cup, Molinari stayed steady keeping a clean scorecard with two birdies and pars at every other hole.
Molinari became the first Italian major winner while Spieth, who entered the final round with the lead, never felt comfortable on the Carnoustie greens failing to win his fourth major.
Paired with Tiger Woods, Molinari never wavered even while Woods gave the golfing world a glimmer of hope that he could return to previous glory.
