For the second time in the history of the tournament, a 16-seed topped a 1-seed when Fairleigh Dickinson, who only got into the tournament because Merrimack wasn’t eligible to represent its conference in the postseason, beat No. 1 Purdue in the first round.
No. 9 Florida Atlantic secured its spot in the Final Four over No. 3 seed Kansas State 79-76 on Saturday for the school’s first-ever trip, and No. 4 seed UConn crushed third-seeded Gonzaga 82-54 to advance to the Final Four in Houston.
Fifth-seeded San Diego State topped No. 6 Creighton 57-56 to be the third team and Miami rallied from a 13-point deficit to top No. 2 Texas 88-81.
