Westlake quarterback Cade Klubnik injured as Chaparrals cruise to 35-0 win over Bowie

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Westlake quarterback and elite 2022 prospect Cade Klubnik was injured during the second quarter of Friday’s game against Bowie.

According to the Westlake High School broadcast, Klubnik was taken in for X-rays after an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. The Clemson commit left the field on a cart and was replaced by senior Christian Edgar late in the second quarter.

Edgar entered the game and promptly led the Chaparrals on a scoring drive capped off by a Jaden Greathouse reception for a 35-0 lead in the closing seconds of the half.

Greathouse’s touchdown turned out to be the final points of the game as the Chaps rolled to their sixth win of the season. Westlake head coach Todd Dodge was optimistic about his starting quarterback’s recovery.

“Cade [Klubnik] is going to be OK. That’s why it’s called a football team. He’ll be alright. It won’t be long,” Dodge told the broadcast after the game.

Klubnik was excellent during his abbreviated appearance in Friday’s battle of unbeaten teams. Klubnik threw a 93-yard touchdown pass to start the scoring in the first quarter. He capped off Westlake’s third scoring drive of the night with a 13-yard run early in the second quarter for a 21-0 lead.

With seven minutes to go in the half, Klubnik went down hard on a pitchback play where he received the pass and ran 34 yards to the Bowie 3-yard line. The gain was ultimately called back due to a penalty.

Every Westlake regular season football game will be shown live on KXAN.com during the 2021 season.

Westlake has outscored its opponents 301-54 while extending its overall win streak to 30 games. The streak dates back to the 2019 regular season.

The Chaparrals’ closest game this season is a 20-point win against Euless Trinity in the second game of the season. Westlake travels to Hays next Thursday. You can watch the game on KBVO.

Bowie has navigated the first half of the season undefeated behind a solid defense. The Bulldogs have held four of their first five opponents to a touchdown or less. Bowie faces Akins next Friday.
