AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The third round of the 87th Masters Tournament will resume Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. at Augusta National Golf Club. Play was suspended for the day at 3:17 p.m. on Saturday.
Four-time major champion Brooks Koepka (-13) widened his lead to four strokes through six holes of his third round on a soggy Saturday.
“It’s obviously super difficult,” Koepka said after play was suspended. “Ball’s not going anywhere. You’ve got rain to deal with, and it’s freezing cold. It doesn’t make it easy.”
“You’ve got to make some pressure putts. You know it was going to be a difficult day. You’ve just got to grind through it and try to salvage something.”
Jon Rahm, No. 3 in the Official World Golf Ranking, completed the second nine Saturday morning to card a second round 69 to draw within two of Koepka at the time.
Playing in the final group with Koepka and Rahm is U.S. Amateur champion Sam Bennett, who was +2 through six holes of his third round when the horn sounded.
“It was cold. Teeing off, it was chilly,” Bennett said afterward. “Hole 1, I think we all had 190 in, and then it started really picking up when we were about hole 3. So it was tough. I mean, hole 5 was playing like a par-5.”
“It was brutal out there. I think they honestly could have called it about 45 minutes earlier, but they tried their best.”
Saturday morning marked the final walk up No. 18 for Augusta native and 1987 Masters champion Larry Mize. He was through 16 when play was suspended on Friday.
“It’s just unbelievable, surreal,” Mize said after completing his 40th Masters. “Words don’t do it justice to have won here and played here for 40 years. Pretty incredible.”
“I mean, the fans were great. To get a reception like that and weather like this, I didn’t expect that. I didn’t expect that at all.”
“It’s amazing to win the Masters and then to do it in that fashion (chipping in at No. 11 during a sudden death playoff) kind of just enhanced it,” Mize continued. “So it was — it’s hard to put into words. It’s been a tremendous blessing to have won here. It has changed my life for the better, no doubt.”
Mize said this week he will continue to attend the Champions Dinner and participate in the Par 3 Contest going forward.
Five-time champion Tiger Woods extended his streak of never missing the cut at Augusta as a professional. He tied a Masters record for consecutive cuts made with 23.
“I’ve always loved this golf course, and I love playing this event,” Woods said after round two. “Obviously I’ve missed a couple with some injuries, but I’ve always wanted to play here. I’ve loved it.”
“I got a chance to play on the weekend. I get a chance to play two more rounds.”
Woods was +6 through the first seven holes of his third round when play was suspended, +9 for the tournament.
Masters history was made Saturday morning. At 63 years and six months, 1992 champion Fred Couples became the oldest player to make the cut at Augusta.
The third round will resume at 8:30 a.m. with live television coverage. The final round is expected to begin at 12:30 p.m. with pairings starting from both No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
