MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) – A young Detroit-area woman whose newborn baby was left to die in a cold garage has been convicted of murder.

A jury in Macomb County deliberated for less than two hours Friday before announcing a verdict against 25-year-old Angela Alexie, who faces life in prison with no parole.

Investigators said Alexie gave birth in a garage in Eastpointe shortly before Christmas in 2014. The boy died in the garage, and his body was discovered at a recycling center.

Prosecutor Bill Cataldo told jurors that Alexie “chose the cowardly way” of getting rid of the child.

Defense attorney Steve Kaplan said involuntary manslaughter was more appropriate, but the jury disagreed.

Kaplan says Alexie was a high school dropout who had lost custody of three children. She’ll be sentenced April 19.
