With culture solidified, Longhorns open football practice

AUSTIN (KXAN) — It was the first day of Texas football practice and head coach Tom Herman was able to just coach football rather than focusing on the culture.

A welcomed change from last year, his first preseason with the Longhorns.

“It’s refreshing, to be honest with you. We’re not a finished product by any stretch of the imagination. There are still times where our culture needs to be reconfirmed but it’s much less now,” Herman said.

The first couple days of practice are more of an extension of summer workouts. Little contact, players running around without full pads, and yet a talented incoming freshman class looks ready to compete.

“We’ve got some really talented freshmen that are going to come in and compete. As a veteran, as a guy that’s a returning starter, you’ve got two choices: improve or get passed by. You’re going to see a lot of these guys get pushed which is a really, really good thing,” Herman said.

The Longhorns will return to practice Saturday and Sunday before an off day Monday. Texas is four weeks away from the season opener against Maryland in Landover, Maryland.
