AUSTIN (KXAN) — A University of Texas student government program that offers safe walks home from campus is getting a golf cart.

The four-row golf cart will allow SUREWalk to service a larger number of students more quickly. The program, partnered with the university’s Parking and Transportation Services, is also implementing vehicle transportation for students on their way home. Both options are expected to be helpful in the event of poor weather conditions.

“What this allows us to do is to service greater number of students and service them more quickly,” Kevin Helgren, UT’s Student Body President said.

The cart was donated and Helgren says they are in talks with other departments to see if they will allow SURE walk to use their golf carts at night since they’re not being used.

“At this point there are a lot of students requesting SURE walk and thankfully we’ve got a good number of paid employees and student volunteers to service those requests, but it’s not uncommon for a student who has requested a SURE walk to have to wait between 10 and 15 minutes for the SURE walk volunteers to get to their location,” said Helgren.

UT students can request a SUREWalk (Students United for Rape Elimination) by calling 512-232-9255 (WALK) or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com. The student government program is open to all UT at Austin students from Monday to Sunday, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

In April, the student government was looking into partnering with rideshare companies Uber and Lyft, before those companies stopped operating within Austin city limits in May.

Efforts to increase student safety were made following the murder of freshman Haruka Weiser on April 3. Weiser was walking to her dorm from the drama building that evening when she was killed.

A safety assessment released by the university in August revealed gaps in security on campus.
