United Way donates $420k toward Blanco flood relief efforts

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — On Friday, the United Way presented three checks to disaster relief organizations to continue their efforts in helping families.

In total, United Way presented $420,000 split three ways between the Blanco River Regional Recovery Team, San Marcos Housing Authority and St. Bernard Project. St. Bernard Project was awarded $324,000, the San Marcos Housing Authority $70,000, and the Blanco Regional Recovery Team received $25,000.

Since the Memorial Day Weekend flood, St. Bernard says they have had boots on the ground in Hays helping families. “We were able to send a team of seven or eight people out here just a couple of days after the storm. They immediately started helping with spontaneous volunteer management, donations, and worked at the VRC in San Marcos,” Reese May with the St. Bernards Project says.

The money they received today he says will help them stay all the way until 2017.

For the San Marcos Housing Authority, Albert Sierra says the funds will help them get the rest of their homeowners back. He says they needed $1 million because so far they have only been able to fix 35 out of 100 units in the CM Allen housing.

“The $70,000 should help us cover the shortfall for 10 units. Those were the units that had the most damage,” Sierra says. He says the Housing Authority chose to fix those with less damage first. He says to meet the rest of the need they will receive money from FEMA and possibly take out loans.

Lastly, James Gabriel with the Blanco River Regional Recovery Team says they plan to stretch their money to help the remaining 1,200 homes in Hays and Caldwell counties that still need help.

“This is a four-year project, a 4-5 year project that will require more funding and more assistance from our partners to get the job done,” Gabriel says.

If you are interested in donating to these teams you can contact United Way, or even purchase a Texas Strong T-shirt where all funds go to flood survivors.
