AUSTIN (KXAN) — A KXAN analysis of Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission online records shows investigators often do not find violations after complaints in Austin.

The records show 144 complaints made about Austin businesses to the TABC so far this year. The two most common complaints were serving minors/letting minors drink and over-serving.

Still, the information also shows that TABC does not often find problems when it looks into those complaints. Of the 144 complaints, investigators found violations in only 28 cases. TABC spokesperson Chris Porter says sometimes investigators do not witness any problems when they visit a location after concerns were raised. He says there are also instances where investigators determine the complaint was unsubstantiated or they find evidence of a violation that is different from the one in the original complaint.

State’s new app helps locate bars, file alcohol complaints

This year the state also made it easier to raise concerns about bars by launching a new cell phone app. After the launch of app from the TABC, customers filed more than 50 app-based complaints statewide. Data requested by KXAN show overall complaints to TABC — including by email and phone — dropped from 781 in September of 2015 to 734 this September, despite the release of the new app in August.

Porter says the TABC is willing to work with and help train businesses if they are having trouble meeting the state’s alcohol-handling requirements.
