FORT WORTH (KXAN) — A spelling bee in North Texas took so long, it literally ran out of words.

It was a regional spelling bee in Fort Worth, and it actually broke the record for how long the entire contest took to complete.

Officials say they ran out of words after 63 rounds, something the judges had never seen before.

The spelling bee usually only lasts around 17 or 18 rounds. The Scripps National Office had to send the judges 25 new words.

An eighth grader was eventually crowned and she’ll head to the national spelling bee in Washington DC.
