Texas grandmother posing on a block of ice goes viral

ICELAND (KXAN) — Photos of a Texas grandmother sitting on a big chunk of ice and smiling as she appears to drift away on a lake in Iceland have gone viral.

At first glance, it appears that 77-year-old Judith Streng was in danger.

The pictures became a sensation online and on television. Headlines said the grandmother “drifted out to sea” and had to be rescued. But she had a big smile on her face.

Judith son, Rod Streng, took the photos on a glacial lake popular with tourists, and he debunks any notion that this was a risky stunt.

In reality, he says, his mother sat on a piece of ice that washed up from the lake and posed on it before a wave slowly pushed her away. He says the water was only a couple of inches deep.

Another man who was on the trip with the Strengs waded out, picked Judith up, and brought her back to shore.

Rod and Judith Streng were in Iceland for a week-long vacation with a church group to see the northern lights. the group consisted of 23 people from Texas, who met up with another group of 31 from Florida. Rod Streng said, “this story has gone all over the place and turned into something a lot bigger than it was.”
