Texas fire ants invade Japanese airport

NARITA, Japan (KXAN) — Fire ants from Texas have been found in a Japanese airport, prompting officials to deal with the venomous and invasive pests.

Some of the ants at Narita International Airport near Tokyo likely came on a plane from Texas. About 160 were found in air freight that arrived from the state, but many have made their way to other areas of the airport.

They were first discovered Sunday, and officials set traps to catch them. On Thursday, 23 ants had been found dead in the traps, but officials couldn’t confirm if they were all fire ants.
