Texas City police cadet arrested after gun accidentally discharges

TEXAS CITY (KXAN) — Two Texas City police cadets are recovering after a gun accidentally discharged in the middle of their law enforcement class Friday.

A third cadet, Clayton Whatley, has been arrested and charged with “unlawful carrying of a firearm.”

Police say Whatley had a loaded gun in his backpack. When he reached inside, it fired and hit two cadets in their legs.

This happened at the “College of the mainland law enforcement training academy” in Texas City.
