Search ongoing for missing 23-year-old Fort Hood soldier

FORT HOOD, Texas (KXAN) — The 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood is trying to find Sgt. Elder Fernandes who has gone missing, according to a social media post by the division on Thursday.

Fernandes, 23, is a Chemical, Biological, Radiolical and Nuclear Specialist assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade, the post reads.

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command says Friday afternoon that Fernandes was last seen by his unit members on Monday, Aug. 17 at a home in Killeen, Texas. He didn’t come to work the next day, but his only known car was found on base at his unit’s parking lot.

Army CID says fellow soldiers report that Fernandes may have left Fort Hood on his own.

He is described as a black man with black hair and brown eyes. Criminal Investigation Command says he is about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs around 133 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black Army training shirt and shorts, with black, orange and yellow athletic shoes.

The ongoing search for Fernandes is being carried out by Fort Hood Soldiers, Army CID Special Agents, the Killeen Police Department and other state and local law enforcement agencies.

Their primary concern is for Fernandes’ health and well-being. The incident remains under investigation.
