REPLACED: Billboard telling liberals to leave Texas taken down

The billboard near Vega, Texas that old liberals to leave Our Great State of Texas

VEGA, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — A billboard on Interstate 40 near Vega in the Texas Panhandle has gone viral, but it has already been replaced with a new message.

The billboard said, “Liberals please continue on I-40 until you have left our GREAT STATE OF TEXAS.”

Randy Burkett, the owner of Burkett Outdoor Advertising and the billboard’s owner, said the client who paid for the billboard wanted to take it down, and the client did not realize it would cause so much controversy.

He told the billboard was replaced with an “advertise here” sign. The Amarillo Convention & Visitors Council is the new client and will be putting up a welcome sign.

Burkett, who is not disclosing his original client’s name, has talked to several outlets like MSNBC, Fox News and Breitbart about the sign.

Prior to the client’s decision to remove the sign, a GoFundMe page was set up to replace the billboard.

The organizers wanted to change the billboard to say “Texas is for everyone–except bigots.”

A Facebook post about the original billboard has more than 17,000 shares, more than 2.3K reactions, and 673 comments.
