Oh Deer: Buck captured after wandering through Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas (KLBK) — A buck caused some mayhem Tuesday morning after he decided to come in the Hub City to take a look around. Lubbock Animal Services was able to catch up with the young buck, but for a while, it was quite the chase.

The deer was first spotted near 82nd Street and Iola Avenue.

“I was in my front yard, about to cut my grass, when this big buck was just standing there,” said Chris Tecmire.

The deer was enjoying Tecmire’s grass and was making his way down the neighborhood. Tecmire said he was shocked to see a deer so far within the city limits, so he immediately called police.

“Officers showed up and were trying to get a lasso on him or tranquilize him,” said Tecmire. “But then he went into my neighbor’s yard where he just went full force into a glass window.”

Thankfully, both the buck and the window weren’t harmed, but afterward, he bolted straight toward 82nd Street during rush hour.

“I was very, very worried that he was going to cause an accident, especially at 9 a.m. on a four-lane highway,” said Tecmire. “He was going to get himself killed, or someone else.”

Lubbock Animal Services managed to corner the buck in an alley near 80th & Genova, where he was tranquilized. Afterward, they loaded him up, gave him some water and let him sleep off his long day.

“Honestly, this is like the third time this has happened in nearly three years,” said Pete Ortiz, an animal control officer. “They get curious, but then after a little bit, it’s common for them to get spooked.”

A few hours later, the buck woke up outside the city limits and is now eating grass in a much safer location.
