SNYDER, Texas (AP) — Police in West Texas say an officer has shot and killed a man during a confrontation between the two.

Police in Snyder, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) northwest of Abilene, say officer Whitney Merket was responding to a report of a suspicious person when she encountered the man Thursday evening.

Police Chief Brian Haggard says an altercation began that resulted in Merket firing her weapon and striking the man, who died at the scene.

His name has not been released by authorities and no other information about the shooting was available.

Merket has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation into the shooting continues. She’s been with the department for seven years.

Texas Rangers are leading the investigation.
