SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KXAN) — Democratic Presidential Candidate Julián Castro announced Tuesday that he will host an “anti-Trump” rally in San Antonio to welcome President Donald Trump as he arrives in the city for a rally/fundraiser of his own.
In a news release, Castro’s campaign said:
I have 3 critical pieces of information I need to tell you:
1. Trump will be here in San Antonio in less than 24 hours.
2. He’ll fundraise off of his recent, cruel comments about asylum seekers.
3. So I’m throwing an anti-Trump, People First rally to give him the welcome he deserves — an overwhelming showing of opposition.
I want Trump to know: When you come into our house and insult our immigrant brothers and sisters — the consequences will be dire.
Castro’s announcement aims to eclipse Trump’s visit and rally and “show Trump that cruelty toward migrant families is not welcome here.”
Castro spoke with KXAN’s political reporter Phil Prazan for an exclusive interview before his rally Wednesday. In the interivew, Castro explains his opposition to the Trump Administration’s policies regarding immigration as cruel and as the antithesis of the message of his rally, and his campaign, saying, “We can choose compassion.”
