AUSTIN (NBC/ KXAN) — Beto O’Rourke said he would tear down the existing border fencing and walls at the U.S.-Mexico border if he could, in an interview with MSNBC

He made the comments Thursday in response to a question posed by Houston-area U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw on Twitter. Crenshaw asked, “If you could snap your fingers and make El Paso’s border wall disappear, would you?”

“Absolutely, I’d take the wall down,” O’Rourke said.

In the tweet, Crenshaw shared a graphic that he said was from the Department of Homeland Security that showed that illegal border crossings decreased significantly after the wall was built.

But O’Rourke told Hayes the barriers don’t bring Americans greater security.

“Here’s what we know: after the Secure Fence Act, we have built 600 miles of wall and fencing on a 2,000-mile border,” O’Rourke said. “What that has done is not in any demonstrable way made us safer.”

Earlier this week, O’Rourke spoke at the “March for Truth” rally in El Paso, held in protest of President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” rally that sought to drum up support for border wall funding.

While there are rumors abound about the possibility of O’Rourke jumping into the 2020 presidential race, he hasn’t made any firm announcements. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this month, O’Rourke said he would make a decision by the end of February and he has a planned meet and greet Friday in the key Midwest battleground.
