Explosive device in package found with note outside Beaumont Starbucks

Starbucks in Beaumont after an explosive device was found inside a package.

A suspicious explosive device inside a package was found with a note outside a Starbucks in Beaumont early Thursday morning.

Responding officers set up a perimeter around the Starbucks at 3935 Dowlen Rd. around 4:45 a.m., while members of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force investigated along with other agencies.

Police learned that an employee at first brought the package inside from on top of a garbage can and tried to open it, but stopped after noticing a note.

The employee then took the package back outside and called the police. Officials say the device, which was made safe by FBI and ATF bomb technicians, was a legitimate explosive device.

Beaumont police urged residents not to open or touch suspicious packages.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the FBI Houston Field Office at 713-693-5000. People who may have taken pictures or video of the area going back to April 23 are asked to contact police.

In Austin last month, a serial bomber killed two people and injured several others after leaving package bombs outside homes.
