3 dead, 1 injured in early morning standoff in Temple

TEMPLE, Texas (KWKT) — Temple police say three people are dead and a fourth person is in the hospital after an early morning standoff.  

Temple police received reports of a shooting in a neighborhood near Lamar Middle School just after 6 a.m., according to Temple Police spokesperson Shawana Neely. A suspect was believed to have barricaded themselves in a home and was firing shots. 

Temple police SWAT team and negotiators worked to make contact with the suspect and a police command center was set up in the school. 

Lamar Middle School and a nearby elementary school were put on lockdown but students could enter school through the south side of campus.

A school district official said there was no threat to the schools themselves, but extra security and other district personnel were sent to the facility.

Jefferson Elementary which is also nearby was in a similar condition, with the campus locked down and extra security in place, but students were being received.
