AUSTIN (KXAN) — President Donald Trump has strong contenders in Beto O’Rourke, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden in the 2020 elections in Texas, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday morning. Of the three possible contenders, the poll found that O’Rourke was the strongest one for Texas voters.

Sanders, a 2016 favorite, announced on Feb. 19 that he will be running for the top office in 2020.

O’Rourke has been teasing voters for more than a month with the possibility that he may announce a bid as well. Sources said Wednesday that he passed up a chance to replace U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in the Senate in order to run for president but he has not made any announcement yet.

Biden too has been teasing voters and on Wednesday, NPR reported that he was ‘very close’ to a decision as his family gives their blessing.

The poll took a very early look at possible 2020 presidential matchups. Here’s how the hypothetical matchups fared according to the poll:

Trump has stronger footing over Democratic hopeful from San Antonio, Julian Castro with a 46 to 41 percent lead, mostly due to more independent voters skewing in the president’s favor, the poll shows.

A previous Quinnipiac poll showed Texans were evenly split on the issue of a border wall which has been a big White House agenda in the last several months. A Gallup poll also found that the president’s approval ratings had bumped up by two percent in Texas and at the national level.
