AUSTIN (KXAN) — Saturday night against Tulsa wasn’t Texas’ best effort, but it did result in a win. If the Longhorns ever put together a complete performance, Texas coach Tom Herman believes his Horns could be the best.
“I tell them all the time, our best is good enough. Our very best is good enough week-in and week-out,” Herman said.
They’ll need their best this week against USC, but then again maybe not. The Trojans are in the middle of their own identity crisis. Freshman quarterback JT Daniels has made his first two college starts and looks like a freshman.
In USC’s 17-3 loss to Stanford this weekend, Daniels completed 16 of 34 passes and bruised his hand on a helmet.
All indications are that Daniels will be ready to go this Saturday in Austin. The Trojans defense will definitely be up to the task of stopping a Longhorns offense that isn’t clicking with any sort of efficiency.
“It’s USC, they’re going to reload and they have got talent all over the field, they have got a ton of speed on defense, so, yeah, to your point about last year, I think, yeah, the guys that played in that game were here for that game, understand that we certainly can compete with anybody in the country,” Herman said.
After a loss to Maryland and a 7-point win over Tulsa, criticism and frustration is on every corner of the Longhorn internet but according to Herman it’s not infiltrating the team. He made positivity a point in his Tulsa post game press conference and he maintained the message Monday.
Herman said some social media can be “toxic to a locker room”, but he did have a heartfelt message for the fanbase.
“I love our fans. Mack Brown told me when I got the job that this can be the greatest job in America because there’s tens of millions of people that care very passionately about what happens with their long horn football team and it can be one that’s difficult too for the exact same reason,” Herman said.
“The expectations that are put on us from the outside are never going to meet or exceed the expectations that we put on ourselves. I love our fans, absolutely love them.”
