Texas makes statement in Sugar Bowl win over Georgia

News

NEW ORLEANS (KXAN) — The stage was set for Texas to make a statement, playing in a New Years Six bowl game for the first time in nine years, matched up with an SEC powerhouse that believed it should’ve been playing for a national championship.

With all of that on the table, the Longhorns blasted that statement loud and clear playing with a physical style that Georgia just couldn’t match.

Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger ran for three touchdowns and 64 yards while passing for 169 yards leading Texas to the 28-21 victory over Georgia.

The Sugar Bowl MVP, Ehlinger, finishes the season with 41 total touchdowns (25 passing and 16 rushing). Ehlinger’s 16 rushing touchdowns breaks Vince Young’s and Don Wiggington’s Texas record for rushing scores by a quarterback.

The biggest question coming into the Sugar Bowl match-up was whether Texas could match Georgia’s physicality. The Texas defense answered those questions forcing two turnovers and holding the Bulldogs rushing attack to 72 yards.

Georgia entered the game with the 12th ranked rushing offense in the country.

The Longhorns finish the season 10-4 winning 10 games in a season for the first time since the 2009 season. Texas will likely finish the season in the top 10 of the national polls.
