Teen continuing mother’s tradition of building Habitat for Humanity homes

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Taylor Thompson is spending his Saturdays doing something a little different than most teenagers.

He is helping build a home for a deserving family through Habitat for Humanity. The hard work began with fundraising in November, a little more than a year after Taylor’s mom, Maureen, passed away following an 11-year battle with cancer. Taylor decided to follow in Maureen’s footsteps. She helped design Habitat homes for families while she was an architect student at the University of Texas.

Maureen’s work also encouraged her own parents to get involved, and they have helped build 70-plus homes with Habitat for Humanity in South Carolina. Taylor’s first goal was to raise $85,000 to build his first home. He hit his goal while out of school on winter break, and donations are still rolling in. Eventually he may have enough money to build several homes, which would be a dream come true.

“I think she has an immense sense of pride, and I’m 100% sure that she was definitely smiling down from heaven last Saturday when we put that first wall up, and I’m pretty sure she’s still smiling,” Taylor told KXAN Saturday.

Taylor hopes to finish the house soon. Habitat for Humanity has already chosen the deserving family who will move in when it’s complete.
