AUSTIN (KXAN) — In a few years, the old Dobie Mall along The Drag will be transformed from a drab building into a retail development that will house Target as one of its main stores.

On Thursday, the large retailer announced it’s opening a 22,000-square-foot store in the now-dubbed Dobie Twenty21. The smaller footprint store will cater to University of Texas at Austin students, faculty and surrounding residents. The store will have fresh groceries, dorm and apartment essentials, apparel and beauty items.

Dobie Twenty21, located at the southeast corner of 21st Street and Guadalupe Street, is currently undergoing a major renovation. Target hopes to open the new store in July 2017.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Target as a tenant to Dobie Twenty21. In the months ahead, we’ll announce additional retail offerings to Dobie Twenty21 that will be part of the substantial renovations included in the two retail levels of Dobie Twenty21, in addition to the transformation of the 25 story dorm tower,” said Ryan D. Rubenkoenig, executive vice president, Red Tail Acquisitions, LLC.

Target’s location near the the UT campus isn’t the only college campus the business is trying to… well… target. In the near year, the company plans to open stores near the University of Cincinnati, University of North Carolina, University of Southern California and the University of Florida, among others.

“We’re able to serve more guests by adding flexible-format stores near top universities across the country, including the quick-trip shopping experience we’ll bring to the University of Texas campus in July 2017,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Properties, Target, in a statement. “We’re thrilled to open our first flexible-format store in Austin and to join the Longhorn community.”
