AUSTIN (KXAN) — The debate over the birthplace of the term “breakfast taco” is going to be settled this morning in Austin.

The dispute is between Austin and San Antonio. The two Texas cities will come together for the Taco Treaty.

The mayors of both cities will settle this hot topic today. In one corner of the ring you have Mayor Steve Adler and in the other is San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor. Each of the city leaders will meet up at the Hilton Austin Downtown to battle it out. Both will bring their A game and best breakfast taco their city has to offer.

Juan In A Million is Austin’s rep. San Antonio is showing up with tacos from Mittman Fine Foods.

“When it comes to the loyalty that our cities have for the infinite possibilities created when you put scrambled eggs into a warm tortilla, there is more that unites Austin and San Antonio than could ever divide us,” said Mayor Adler.

The controversy started after a blog last month from “Austin Eater” suggested the term originated in Austin.

“OK, Mayor Adler and all you longhorn-loving, live-music-listening, boardwalk-running Austinites, I and all the taco-making, taco-eating, taco-reigning San Antonians will take your challenge and raise you one machacado con huevo taco on a flour tortilla recien hecha (freshly made) con salsa verde,” said Mayor Taylor. “I’ll bring some of our favorite tacos and you bring yours!”

May the best taco win!
