AUSTIN (KXAN) — The rainy weather has forced South By Southwest Festival officials to cancel the free concerts planned for Auditorium Shores Saturday evening.
In a statement from SXSW publicist Elizabeth Derczo, the shows were canceled “due to standing water on the parks grounds; the show has been cancelled in order to preserve the parkland.”
The decision to cancel the Auditorium Shores show, according to Derczo, was a joint decision between the City of Austin and SXSW producers.
SXSW and Austin Parks and Recreation organizers had been assessing the conditions of Auditorium Shores and closely monitoring the weather all day.
Early Saturday, the show was delayed until 4:40p.m. based on morning weather models. A Flash Flood Watch for Central Texas was canceled early Saturday afternoon.
Derczo did not send an official notice about the cancellation until 4:45p.m. Fans had already been waiting in line since gates were scheduled to open at 4p.m.
The official SXSW Twitter account mentioned that the festival was working to relocate the bands who had been scheduled to play.
