SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A San Marcos man is in jail charged with intoxication manslaughter, along with a slew of other charges, after police say he jumped a curb and hit and killed a man walking on the sidewalk Friday night.

San Marcos police say Uriah Robinson, 29, was driving a Toyota van around 7:15 p.m. when witnesses saw him jump the curb and hit Tyrus Piano, 48, of Kyle, as he was walking on Riverside Drive near Interstate 35. Robinson’s passenger bailed out of the van while he kept on driving away, police say. Robinson’s passenger was taken into custody by Texas State University police officers a short time later.

Police say Robinson ended up crashing into a tree underneath I-35 at the San Marcos River. Witnesses kept him at the scene of the second location until officers could arrive.

Piano died at the scene. Robinson was taken to the hospital where authorities conducted a blood draw.

He is currently in the Hays County Jail charged with intoxication manslaughter, failure to stop and render aid, escape, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana. His bonds total more than $1 million.
