RRISD takes some schools off the table for controversial rezoning plan

RRISD Boundary Change Meeting_348725

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — It was standing room only inside the board meeting for the Round Rock Independent School District Thursday night.

Most of those in the large crowd were parents ready to fight to keep their children at the middle school they are currently slated to attend. A demographer’s report proposed moving boundary lines for all eleven middle schools to help relieve overcrowding at Walsh and Cedar Valley Middle Schools, and fill a new school opening in the fall, Pearson Ranch Middle School.

“The demographers did exactly what we asked them to do, and sadly it came up to what we don’t want,” RRISD Trustee Terri Romere told the crowd.

The district said the report was just the first step to get the rezoning conversation going, and they will only focus on making boundary changes to Walsh and Cedar Valley Middle Schools.

The news put Dallas Osborn’s mind at ease. He showed up to the meeting to stop RRISD from changing his child’s middle school from Ridgeview to Hernandez — a move he says would’ve increased the commute to school by about four miles one way.

Parents at Walsh and Cedar Valley still have their work cut out for them over the next two weeks.

“I think they knew [rezoning] was coming,” said RRISD Board President Paul Tisch. “And so they’re going to be the ones during the next few meetings, they’re the ones who are going to express dislike or positive feedback and help us come to a final path.”

Those families are encouraged to attend three public hearings to discuss possible changes at Cedar Valley, Chisholm Trail, and Walsh at 7:30 p.m. in the following cafeterias:

  • September 21 at Cedar Valley;
  • September 28 at Chisholm Trail; and
  • September 29 at Walsh.

The board is set to make their final recommendation on Oct. 20, and take a final vote on boundary changes Nov. 17.

The rezoning would take effect for the 2017-2018 school year.
