ALPINE, Texas (AP) — Joaquin Jackson, a retired Texas Ranger who became an author and actor, has died at his West Texas home.

Jackson died June 15 in Alpine. Liz Jackson said Tuesday that her father-in-law had cancer. He was 80.

Jackson was born in Anton, Texas. He farmed and worked as a cowboy before becoming a state trooper. Jackson joined the elite Texas Rangers in 1966. He retired in 1993.

Jackson published two books, “One Ranger: A Memoir” and “One Ranger Returns.”

He acted in several movies, including “The Good Old Boys,” “Palo Pinto Gold” and the 2015 film “Wild Horses” with his friend, director and actor Robert Duvall.

A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pete P. Gallego Center at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
