Random gunshot through window sends woman to hospital

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police have detained a suspect in a shooting that injured a woman in Central Austin early Friday morning. At 1:20 a.m., officers responding to a report of a shooting in the area of 600 Canion Street, near Guadalupe Street, found a woman with a gunshot wound in her torso.

A man at the home said someone he did not know knocked on the door of the home and showed a weapon. The man who answered the door shut it quickly, and then a gunshot came through the window.  It hit a 47-year-old woman inside.

Police say they have detained a suspect and believe there is no further threat to the public. Cpl. Eric Wilson admits, however, that seemingly random crimes can be unsettling.

“They can be scary,” he said. “At this particular time of the morning, you don’t expect anybody to knock on the door and also try to shoot through the window at that particular time as well — especially someone you don’t know.”

The woman who was shot was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge and is expected to recover.
