AUSTIN (KXAN) — St. Michael’s senior quarterback Sam Saxton announced on Twitter that he’ll be joining the Longhorns as preferred walk-on.
Saxton is the son of former Longhorn Jimmy Saxton and the grandson of James Saxton, who was an All-American running back for Texas and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1961.
He was originally committed to play at Southern Mississippi, but decommitted in early December.
The 6-foot, 5-inch slinger is a welcome addition for Texas at a position that has quickly thinned out with Shane Buechele likely leaving after entering his name in the NCAA transfer database and Cameron Rising informing th team that he’s transferring.
Despite playing his senior season at St. Michael’s, Saxton played his junior year at Austin High, nad he was Sam Ehlinger’s backup at Westlake in 2016. 247 Sports has him listed as a three-star prospect.
He joins Roschon Johnson as the only quarterbacks in Texas’ 2019 class.
