Plan for high rise on hold, new fast food restaurant on the menu

AUSTIN ( KXAN) — Plans to build a high rise at South Lamar Boulevard and Riverside Drive have come to a halt for now. Construction has begun for a new restaurant which will be where Taco Cabana once stood.

Pollo Tropical is a Florida-based restaurant with a Caribbean style menu. Fiesta Restaurant Group Inc., which owns Taco Cabana and Pollo Tropical, said it expects the new restaurant to open sometime this summer and will open four more locations in the area, including Kyle.

“Huston Street, who co-owns the land, had expressed a strong desire to redevelop the site at Lamar/Riverside and we felt that was a great opportunity to build a brand new Pollo Tropical at an excellent location as we expand into Austin,” said Tim Taft, CEO of Fiesta Restaurant Group, Inc.

The piece of land has been under a microscope since 2013 when a Dallas and California-based company planned to build a 96-foot luxury residential building.

Huston Street, an Austin native, former University of Texas baseball player and pitcher for the Los Angeles angels of Anaheim, bought the property which housed the old Taco Cabana and Paggi House.

Drenner Group, a land use and real estate law firm, represents Huston and said he wants to get into the real estate business for the long term once he’s finished with professional baseball.

Amanda Swor, a senior project manager with Drenner Group, said there will be a high rise in the future, but there are no plans as of now.
