HOUSTON, Texas (KXAN) — It may look like an alien invasion, but it’s really a view of the Northern Lights from space.
NASA released images of the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis taken from the International Space Station. The Aurora Australis is the Southern Lights.
Both of these phenomenons occur when electrically charged sub-atomic particles in Earth’s magnetic field collide.
The collision between neutral atoms in the upper atmosphere creates what looks like glowing waves in the sky.
