NEW ORLEANS (KXAN) — Photojournalist Nick Wagner crouched down on the Superdome field for a photo opportunity with rival mascots Texas’ Bevo, the longhorn and Georgia’s Uga, the bulldog. Uga was wearing his red shirt and collar, and Wagner wanted a picture down low of the Bulldog.
“Meanwhile, Bevo’s behind me. I’m like, alright, he’s chill, he’s always been chill when I’ve been around,” recalled the Austin-American Statesman photographer. “And people start running and I look back and I see Bevo and his horns coming right at me.”
Video from KXAN viewer Shelly Krass showed Bevo busting out of his enclosure ahead of the Sugar Bowl, scattering members of the media and Uga and his handlers.
“I couldn’t believe it was happening,” Wagner said. Below is a highlighted image showing where he was in the crowd.
Wagner pulled up his shirt to show his bruised spine mid-way down his back where Bevo’s horn hit him. He said he also got a nice “right hook” from the bovine’s horn in the face.
The Longhorn Network tweeted shortly after the incident that Uga was “fine.”
