AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Pflugerville Police Chief Jessica Robledo received two fake checks last week from local businesses, according to a release from the police department.

The two fake checks totaling $5,100 were from legitimate local businesses and when police officers contacted them, they were completely unaware of the checks.

“Scammers will often use real companies to make the check seem authentic,” Pflugerville police wrote. “Fraudulent checks may take weeks to be discovered by your bank, and once deposited, you are responsible for that money.”

Businesses and Pflugerville residents are urged to be vigilant about checks they receive and to research the company listed on the check.

If you think you may have received a bad check, you should report it immediately. You can call the Pflugerville Police Department at (512) 990-6700.

“If a scam like this can happen to the Police Chief, it can happen to you,” officials wrote.
