PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) – A student at Dessau Middle School has been diagnosed with pertussis, also known as whooping cough, prompting Pflugerville ISD officials to alert parents.

The Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department sent a letter to parents and staff on Tuesday.

Officials are asking parents to make sure their childrens’ immunizations are up to date. If your child has pertussis, you are asked to keep your child at home until the child has been cleared to return by the physician or health department.

In 2015, there were 1360 cases and no deaths reported in Texas. In 2014, there were two deaths from the infection in Texas. One of the victims was in Travis County where health officials said the child wasn’t old enough to receive the vaccination.
