NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KXAN) – A man is dead and a family is injured after a fatal crash in New Braunfels Friday night.

At around 10:46 p.m., New Braunfels Police and the New Braunfels Fire Department were called to the crash at the 4800 block of North Interstate 35, near the intersection of Conrads Lane.

According to the police investigation, a 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse exited the main lanes of Interstate 35 at a high rate of speed when the driver crashed into the back of an Explorer traveling southbound on the frontage road in the same direction. The crash sent both vehicles out of control and into a nearby field.

Witnesses told authorities they saw the Eclipse engulfed in flames and saw a male driver trapped inside the vehicle. Officers arrived and were able to extinguish the fire but the man later died.

The driver of the Eclipse has been identified by police as 53-year-old Roque Romero of Luling Texas.

Police say a family of seven from Corpus Christi were in the 2015 Ford Explorer involved in the crash. The family, ranging from 31-years-old to 4-months-old were transported to hospitals in New Braunfels, Austin and San Antonio for medical treatment.

NBPD closed the southbound frontage for several hours following the crash. Police believe speed and alcohol played a factor.

The crash remains under investigation.
