ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Getting through Round Rock on Interstate 35 will be tricky this weekend as the Texas Department of Transportation starts a major overhaul of the intersection at Old Settlers Boulevard.

Starting Friday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m., the main lanes of Interstate 35 will begin to close at Old Settlers Boulevard for bridge demolition until 7 a.m. Saturday. The lanes will close again at the same time again Saturday night. Traffic will be detoured to the frontage roads. The closure is part of a project that will replace the bridge over I-35 and build two new U-turn bridges.

“That’s really going to speed things up,” said Round Rock resident Martin Cox.

“Once you get used to it, traffic moves great,” said another Round Rock driver, John Harris.

Starting Friday, the Old Settlers Boulevard bridge is closed to eastbound traffic. Cars are being diverted to the southbound frontage road. Westbound traffic will detour to the newly constructed U-turn bridge. However, the lane will be closed to westbound traffic during the same time lanes on I-35 are closed, starting at 8 p.m. Friday, until 7 a.m. Saturday, and then again on Sunday overnight.

“I mean it’s going to be a hassle,” said Harris.

Southbound drivers will have to exit the highway either before or after Old Settlers, at RM 1431 or US 79, adding a few more miles to their cars and minutes to their commute.

The Texas Department of Transportation says the bridge is expected to open back up in Summer 2018, weather permitting.

Editor’s Note: TxDOT originally said the freeway would reopen at 10 a.m., but changed it to 7 a.m. on Saturday.
