O negative blood in extremely short supply, donors needed

News

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Blood Center of Central Texas is currently experiencing a “critical shortage” of O negative blood.

O negative is the universal blood type that can be given to anyone and the current supply is 60 percent below the center’s comfort level. The blood type is especially needed during emergency situations, and with the huge increase in visitors during SXSW, more accidents are possible.

All eligible donors are being asked by the blood center to make donation a priority, so that patient needs can be met.

In the Austin area, there are three donations sites:

  • Austin Donor Center, 4300 N. Lamar Blvd.
  • South Austin, 3100 W. Slaughter Ln.
  • Round Rock Donor Center, 2132 N. Mays, Suite 900 (at I-35 exit 254)

Please visit the In Your Hands website for hours of operation and additional information.
