Northbound MoPac will shut down each night this week

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Starting Tuesday night, all of northbound MoPac Expressway will be shut down each night at 8 p.m.

What does that mean if you find yourself on northbound MoPac around Lady Bird Lake at 8:05 p.m. this week? First, expect significant traffic delays. Police will be at the Enfield Road intersection directing traffic to help you get out of the mayhem. All traffic will be detoured off the Enfield Road exit, where drivers will pass through the Enfield intersection before reentering MoPac.

Second, these closures will be in place Tuesday through Friday nights until 5:30 a.m. each day. Depending on weather conditions, closures may be needed next week as well.

Why now? Originally, the closures were going to happen next week, but the threat of cold weather led to an expedited work plan, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) said Monday. Their goal: to get the third northbound lane open before the start of the Trail of Lights on Dec. 10.

The Cesar Chavez and Sixth Street ramp to northbound MoPac will also be closed, with traffic diverted to the Enfield onramp. The CTRMA says the closures are needed to install new pavement that will restore MoPac to three northbound lanes between the lake and Enfield.

The third lane has been closed since February, when traffic was realigned to make room for construction of an express lane underpass.
