‘No refusal’ weekend nets nearly 200 DWI arrests

AUSTIN (KXAN) — From Aug. 19 through Sept. 5, the Austin Police Department’s Extended No Refusal initiative led to 196 driving while intoxicated arrests.

The period was in place nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Austin police released the following numbers showing their results:

  • 56 arrests from breathalyzer with consent
  • 29 arrests from blood drawn with consent
  • 111 arrests from blood drawn through search warrant
  • Total: 196

Outside of the No Refusal hours during the same period there were 22 arrests for a combined total of 218 DWI arrests.

“APD is continuously focused on preventing lives from being lost on the streets, highways and waterways of Austin,” the department said in a statement.

During the July 4 holiday no refusal period, Austin police made 155 DWI arrests. Before that, Austin police’s anti-boating while intoxicated initiative, Operation Dry Water, resulted in zero arrests. The nationwide operation targeted intoxicated boaters a week before the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
