LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) — Drivers in Leander will notice a new traffic light at the intersection of 183A Toll frontage road and San Gabriel Parkway.
A recent traffic study determined the need for the new signal. The study evaluates eight criteria such as physical conditions around the intersection, traffic volume and congestion, pedestrian and school activity, accident history, and other factors that determine whether an intersection warrants a signal. In this case, accident history and peak hour traffic counts at the intersection warranted installation of the new signal.
Along with a traffic study, there was an outpouring of support for the installation of the signal light from people who live in the area, the Leander Police Department, the Leander Fire Department and Williamson County Commissioner, Cynthia Long.
The typical total cost for a signal like the one at this location would be $250,000 but since the intersection already had the columns installed and the majority of the infrastructure in place for the signal, the final cost for installation was $120,000.
Motorists should be aware that the signal will initially operate in “four-way flash” mode and will be fully operation starting on Jan. 26.
