COVINGTON, Ga. (KXAN) — A Boy Scout from Texas died Monday when a tree branch fell on him during a camping trip in Georgia.
The 14-year-old and another boy were in their tent after getting a weather alert to seek shelter while severe storms moved through Covington, Georgia. Officials say the branch fell around 3:45 p.m., hitting the boy’s head and chest.
“I can’t even imagine what the scout leader and the rest of the troop is going through right now, let alone the parents, who are that far away from their child,” Jeff Alexander with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office told NBC affiliate 11Alive. “I wouldn’t even be able to put that into words.”
He was part of a group from Texas attending the week-long jamboree for scouts from the South and Southeast. Officials are working to contact his family and are investigating the situation.
